From Leaks to Bursts – How to Keep Your Pipes in Top Shape

Our plumbing systems are the unsung heroes of our homes, quietly managing the flow of water and waste. But like any part of our house, they require some TLC to keep them functioning smoothly. With some simple practices, you can keep them in excellent shape for years ahead. Maintaining your water pipes is easier than you think!

6 Ways to Extend the Lifespan of Your Plumbing Pipes

While maintaining your plumbing system might seem minor, neglecting it can lead to costly repairs and significant inconveniences. The consequences of poor plumbing maintenance can be substantial, from slow drains and unpleasant odors to burst pipes and water damage. Fortunately, with a few simple preventative measures, you can keep your pipes and drains in tip-top shape for years and prevent them from bursting.

1. Drip. Drip Drip. A small leak today can turn into a big headache tomorrow. Addressing minor plumbing problems as soon as you notice them can prevent them from developing into more serious (and expensive) issues. Don’t ignore warning signs, such as dripping sounds or a small puddle of water. Call a local plumber to assess and fix the problem before it worsens.

2. Regular drain cleaning. Slow drains could indicate a blockage somewhere in your plumbing system. If your pipes have buildup or blockages, water has a more challenging time flowing through them. This can make your pipes wear out faster, which might cause leaks or possibly bigger problems. Stubborn clogs or blockages can cause water to back up into your house. We recommend homeowners have a sewer line inspection and drain cleaning every two years to reduce the chance of costly problems later.

3. Maintain good water pressure. High water pressure can shorten the lifespan of your plumbing system. The ideal residential water pressure is 50-60 pounds per square inch (psi). Water pressure higher than 80 psi can strain your pipes (pipe joints, fixtures, and seals), causing them to erode faster, leak, or burst, and it can be uncomfortable and irritating for your skin. If you suspect your water pressure is too high, we recommend testing it with a water pressure gauge. You can then lower the pressure by adjusting the pressure reducing valve (also called pressure relief valve or pressure regulating valve). To do this, turn the adjustment screw on the valve counterclockwise.

4. Think before you flush. Your toilet is not a trash can! Only flush toilet paper and human waste. Flushing anything else, such as wet wipes, paper towels, feminine products, or toys, can clog your pipes and lead to leaks, bursts, or backups. Avoid these issues by disposing of garbage and debris in the trash. Call a local plumber immediately if your drain pipes clog from flushing something you shouldn’t have.

5. Ditch the chemical drain cleaners. Chemical drain cleaners can be harsh on your pipes and may cause damage over time. The lye or acids found in most chemical drain cleaners are highly corrosive and dangerous. Prolonged use can lead to the deterioration of pipes, eventually causing them to burst. A safer, more reliable, and effective method for dealing with clogs without harming your pipes is to mix vinegar and baking soda or use a plunger or drain snake.

6. Keep pipes from freezing. When temperatures drop to 20 degrees or below for extended periods, your pipes may freeze and burst. It’s wise to take certain precautions. Consider insulating your pipes, opening cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate, and letting your faucets drip slightly.

Water always flows throughout our homes, whether washing our hands, showering, flushing the toilet, running the washing machine, or irrigating the lawn. By following these six tips, you can increase the lifespan of your pipes and prevent them from bursting. Your future self will thank you!
